We are a small family run stud who pride ourselves on producing and breeding Welsh Sec D cobs to the highest standards. Our cobs live a varied life, all are broken to ride (once old enough and ready) and are hacked out as well as being schooled, shown and bred from.
My interest in Welsh cobs originally comes from my mum. My mum started the Belfalas Stud before I was born in 1978, with two mares Taybog Melody and Walden Amulet. She chose and used the stallion of Mr John Taylor at the Taybog stud, Gornoeth Caddog, and her mares both produced quality black colt foals - Belfalas Prize and Belfalas Image. Over a year after this we hit a rough patch, as dad lost his job, so mum sold up all her cobs at that time.
We didn't start again with Welsh Cobs until life had moved on considerably. Mum had a divorce and was working full time in the field of education and I was 16 years old. Mum decided that she was ready to buy another horse so we started scouring the adverts. It wasn't long till we spotted the advert for a black Sec D yearling - Ollerset Prince, and there the start of our friendship with Dominic & Stephanie at the Ollerset Stud began.
Two years later I was ready to buy my own horse, so we phoned Ollerset once again and asked if they had any youngsters available. Dominic told us to pop over and have a look at his stock, which we duely did that same day! That day we met and fell in love with the most peculiar looking bay colt - I use the word 'peculiar' because he had a tiny triangle shaped head which really did look very odd, and a great big frothy mass of mane on top! He had the most gorgeous legs under him and my word he could move! What followed was the purchase of my first pony, a 'peculiar' looking Welsh Sec D colt, who started a passion in me, taught me all I know about raising and producing young horses, filled me with pride every day and gave me a dream to work towards - Ollerset Dandy.
Me and Dandy did a lot together during our journey, which ultimately came to an untimely end. We went from being a wild unhandled colt who wasn't halter broken and a young girl with her first horse, to a real partnership. We had our fights and scraps along the way (which I always won!) but we ended up being the best of friends - I swear I knew what that horse was thinking. He had the most beautiful nature of any stallion you would ever care to meet. Dandy also taught Adrian a thing or two during the short time that Adrian was lucky enough to know him. He learned all the basis of handling and caring for horses from Dandy. We sent Dandy away to be professionally produced for showing under saddle when he was 7 years old. Whilst away from home he went to many shows, always in the ribbons and was good enough to win Supreme Championship at the Southern Counties Welsh Pony & Cob Association Show. Just weeks after that he went down in his stable with colic. Although we had Dandy opperated on and he recieved the finest care, he got colic again whilst recovering, it was too soon and he had to be put to sleep.
Whilst Dandy had been away at his pony parties, I had started to scour the country in search of future wives for him. I contacted Heather Davis & Steve Randall at the Saith Stud to ask for their assistance in this matter, as I had long been an admirer of their breeding, particularly that of Sydenham Dragon. Whilst visiting Saith we saw some outstanding cobs, and fell in love with Saith Magical Tiffany a yearling filly (Sydenham Dragon x Glantraeth Cindy) and Saith Magical Charm (Sydenham Dragon x Derwen Gwenfil) a 6yr old mare in Foal to Monumental Mason of the Northwick Stud. Heather & Steve agreed to let us have these two stunning girls and we got them home in Febuary 2008. In anticipation of our first foal, myself and Adrian decided to take on our own stud name together - Juliad Stud was born! As fate would have it we lost Dandy, their planned future husband, just a few months later.
Since that time, we have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity of securing our own farm premises, enabling us to keep our beautiful '4 legged children' at home. We also had the opportunity of purchasing, bringing on, bombproofing and selling an additional two Ollerset cobs, Ollerset Foxy Lady and Ollerset Margarita - both beautiful, very well bred girls, who will now go on to have a ridden future with Yvonne Hargreaves.
We have also, after over 2 years without a stallion, eventually managed to 'fill Dandy's shoes' - a very difficult task indeed, but one that only a colt of the same breeding had any chance of fulfilling. Ollerset Solo (Cruglwyd William x Ollerset Bonnie Lass) was purchased during September 2010 to take on this role.
The passion that Dandy fuelled in me has grown and been matched by that of my wonderful husband Adrian, who supports me and works equally hard with me on all to do with our cobs.
We sincerely hope that you will enjoy viewing our 'children' and join us in recognising the quality that we feel honoured to have brought together on our small farm. If you wish to come and visit them and us in person, just drop us a line - we will be happy to hear from you.
Juliet & Adrian Tully.
